The seborrheic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin disease that causes the creation of off-white plates in oily areas such as the scalp or inside the ear. It may appear with or without skin redness.
The seborrheic dermatitis is believed due to a combination of overproduction of sebum and irritation from a yeast called Malessezia. It can manifest itself in many different areas of the body. The areas commonly affected include the scalp, eyebrows, eyelids, nasal folds, lips, the area behind the ears, external ear, and along skin folds on the trunk.
Responding seborrheic dermatitis
You may experience dandruff and dry shampoo against dandruff or medicated shampoos. The active ingredients in these shampoos include salicylic acid, coal tar, zinc, resorcin, ketoconazole or selenium.
Lotions containing selenium, ketoconazole, or corticosteroids may be prescribed for severe cases. If this is the face or chest, apply pharmaceutical lotion twice a day.
The seborrheic dermatitis may improve in summer, especially after outdoor activities.
The severity of seborrheic dermatitis can be reduced by controlling risk factors and given special attention to skin care.
